Huntsville, Alabama
Settled in1805, Huntsville is a place where old meets new. From Historic homes to space stations, there is much to keep you busy.
In order to appreciate what Huntsville is today, you should
visit some of its attractions that focuson its past. At
the Alabama Constitution Village you will see a re-created
town complex with buildings representing Alabama when it
entered the Union in 1819. The Village has guides dressed
in period costumes as well as demonstrations and displays.
At the Historic Huntsville Depot you can see the division
headquarters for the Memphis and Charleston Railroad Company.
It was used as a Union prison during the Civil War. There
are exhibits on transportation, the Civil War and cotton.
Do you like architecture? Then be sure to visit the Twickenham Historic District
in downtownHuntsville. You will see Alabama’s largest grouping
of antebellum homes.
You can choose guided or self guided tours, and will find
that many of the homes are occupied by descendants of the
original owners or builders.
For the art lover, the Huntsville Museum of Art is time well spent. At the five gallery art center, you will see traditional and contemporary work by regional and national artist. There are changing collections and permanent displays, ours, films and concerts, or lectures as well. At the Von Braun Center , you can see a variety of shows and productions in the 9,000 seat area, the 2,171 seat concert hall or the 502 seat theatre.
There are many outdoor family friendly activities to enjoy. At the Monte Sano State Park you will find hiking trails, picnic areas, a playground and concessions. You can spend an afternoon or take advantage of one of the camping areas or rental cabins. The Burritt Museum & Park has a unique 11 room cross-shaped house with exhibits on gems, minerals, antiques, and historical items. The 167 acre park has four authentically furnished cabins, a blacksmith shop, a smokehouse, and a church. There are also hiking trails, picnic tables and garden tours. Other Huntsville parks are the Big Spring International Park and the Madison County Nature Trail.
Of course you can't talk long about Huntsville without bringing up Space Camp and the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. This educational and fun site really stands out as an Alabama favorite.
Southern Adventures
This small family park is big on family fun. Summertime brings the opening of Adventure Island water park which has three, 320 foot long open flume slides, 2 kiddie pools, a 180 foot enclosed slide and a children’s playground. The park also has other great family activities. You can enjoy a game of miniature golf on Peg’s Trial or Alabama Amazon, scale the heights at The Rock, and test your skill at bumper cars, batting cages, arcade games, or try out Max Flight or Full Swing. The park also has 7 amusement rides and a soft play area for younger children.
