Hiking in Alabama

by Waka Jawaka

The Pinhoti Hiking Trail in Talladega is the state’s foremost long-distance recreational trail. From its southern end in the Talladega National Forest (TNF), the Pinhoti travels 102 miles through Alabama’s Talladega Mountains and continues through Calhoun County to the Georgia line. The Cave Creek Trail near Hernandez Peak will lead you through tunnels of rhododendron bushes as you enjoy sensational mountain scenery. Due to thorn bushes and shrubs the hiking can be difficult as you reach the Nubbin Creek Trail junction on Little Carney Head which ultimately connects to the end of the Pinhoti at Parker High Point.

On the Chinnabee Silent Trail in the TNF the trail clings to rock walls on an elevated wooden platform and provides views of several waterfalls. The dirt and rock path leads through a gorge which goes to the lake, and allows you to enjoy the natural beauty of the forest. In the Sipsey Wilderness you will find Bee Branch Trail and Trail 209 which is the longest trail in the area. Along Bee Branch Trail the dirt path winds its way through a canyon as well as waterfall and caves. Trail 209 follows the Sipsey River so you will enjoy waterfall and towering limestone cliffs.
