Auburn, Alabama is about an hour’s drive from Montgomery
and is home to Auburn University. You will find ornate
architecture from the Greek Revival and Victorian eras,
numerous museums, outdoor fun and many great places to shop.
You can spend an afternoon ou t
on the Auburn Greens Golf Course at Mill Creek or practice
your swing at the Indian Springs Golf course. If you are
a patron of the arts, then visit the Jan Dempsey Community
Arts Center offers theatre and dance performances and events.
While visiting Auburn, you can stay at any of the national
hotel/motel chains, or you may choose the Auburn University
Hotel with its elegant rooms, restaurant, bar, fitness room,
pool and conference center. There are several bed and breakfast
like the Crenshaw House B&B which offer a variety of amenities.
Also convenient to many Auburn activities and attractions
are the Leisure Time Campgrounds and the Eagle Landing Campground.
Auburn University is one of America’s earliest land-grant
colleges and the first four year educational institution
in Alabama to admit women on an equal basis as men. There
are tours of the campus buildings and grounds. You can stroll
the Tiger Walk of Auburn and see the plaques which commemorate
coaches and athletes who have brought sports recognition
to the college. At Lovelace Athletic Museum, you will find
a shrine to Auburn greats like Bo Jackson Charles Barkley.
At Auburn’s Chewacla State Park, you can indulge in nature. The 696 acre park is on the fall line which divides the Piedmont plateau from the plains of the coast. Here you can rent a boat for some peaceful time on the water, or go fishing and swimming in the 26 acre lake. There is a bath house and concessions, as well as picnic areas and a playground. You can amble along nature trails, trek the hiking trails or pedal on the mountain bike trails. Overnight facilities include campsites and rental cabins (to reserve call 1-800-252-7275).
Make sure to visit the Surfside Water Park while in Auburn. Except in the winter when swimming outdoors isn't very much fun.
